Steady Early Pace Fades Late Over the Marathon Distance Johnny Colombi finished the marathon in 3:56:00, an overall pace of 9:00 per mile across 26.2 miles. His race built steadily through the opening half, holding sub-8:00 pace through mile 11, before a gradual softening set in through the second half that pushed his final miles into the 10:00-11:48 range. The strongest stretch came from mile 1 through mile 17, where Colombi averaged close to 8:00 per mile with remarkable consistency, never straying far from that mark despite Boulder's elevation above 5,000 feet. That opening portion built a solid foundation before the closing miles slowed. Sharpening pacing discipline in the back half could help him carry that early rhythm further into future marathons.
