Steady Early Pace Gives Way to a Determined Closing Push Tom Surratt crossed the line in 4:06:53, an average of 9:25 per mile across the marathon distance. He ran the first half of the race with notable consistency, holding paces between 8:47 and 9:15 through the first eighteen miles before the effort naturally settled into the 9:4010:30 range over the closing miles, a common shift late in a marathon. His strongest stretch came early: from mile 1 to mile 9, Surratt covered that stretch in 1:21:29, averaging roughly 9:03 per mile, the most consistent mile-to-mile rhythm of his race. That composed opening came at Boulder's elevation of over 5,000 feet, a factor worth noting given the pace he sustained through the middle miles before the course's late stretches asked more of him.
