Strong Midrace Surge Before a Late-Mile Fade Dustin Hitt finished the marathon in 3:50:27, an average pace of 8:47 per mile. His race built steadily through the middle miles, dropping from an opening 8:59 to a strong stretch between miles 15 and 18, where he covered four straight miles between 8:11 and 8:21 per mile his fastest sustained running of the day. That surge pulled his cumulative pace down to its lowest point, near 8:31 per mile, by mile 21. The final miles told a different story, as his pace slowed from 8:56 at mile 22 to 11:05 by mile 25 before closing in 9:53. Boulders elevation, over 5,000 feet, adds a layer of difficulty to any effort at this distance, and Hitts early and midrace pacing showed he was well prepared for it before the closing miles caught up with him.
