Early Speed Gives Way to a Gritty Back Stretch Dane Shaffer finished the marathon in 4:15:32, an overall pace of 9:45 per mile. He was quick and remarkably even through the first 17 miles nine of those miles clicked by between 8:16 and 8:53, with the mile 1-9 stretch averaging 8:40 per mile, the fastest sustained running of his day. The pace cooled progressively from mile 18 onward, with miles 18-23 slipping into the 11:00-12:20 range, before he found a bit more rhythm over the final three miles to close things out. Boulder's altitude, over 5,000 feet, sits behind every mile of that effort. Shaffer would have passed through the lululemon Power-Up Zone near mile 22.5 right in the thick of his toughest stretch, before carrying on to the finish on the Pearl Street Mall.
