Strong Opening Miles Give Way to a Patient Second Half Clark Griffin covered the marathon in 4:19:56, an overall pace of 9:55 per mile. His first eight miles were the clear highlight, clicking off in roughly 7:35 per mile, well ahead of his final pace. From there, cumulative pace steadily eased through the middle miles, climbing past 9:00 per mile by mile 18 and settling near 10:00 per mile for the stretch from mile 20 to 25, before a final mile that ticked back down to 8:21. Griffin's early pace held up well given Boulder's elevation above 5,000 feet, a factor that tends to weigh on effort as a marathon wears on.
