Strong Early Pace Carries Through Miles Before Late Fade Evan Gunning completed the marathon in 4:20:36. He built a consistent rhythm through the first 18 miles, holding between 8:26 and 9:07 per mile and passing halfway near an 8:40 pace. Miles 10-11 stood out as his fastest stretch, dropping to a 7:45 split and pulling his cumulative pace down to 8:39. The back half told a different story, as pace slowed steadily from mile 19 onward, settling into the 12-14 minute range through the final miles before a modest pickup over the last mile. Running the marathon course that winds out past Boulder Reservoir and County backroads before finishing on the Pearl Street Mall, Gunning navigated the elevation of a city sitting over 5,000 feet before crossing through downtown Boulder to the finish.
