Strong Early Pace Fades Late Over 26.2 Miles Sage Berquist finished the marathon in 4:16:50, an overall pace of 9:48 per mile. The opening miles were the fastest of the race, with mile 4 clocking 7:44, the quickest stretch on record. Through the first 12 miles, pace held near 8:008:30 per mile, keeping early splits well ahead of the final average. From mile 13 onward, per-mile times eased steadily, dropping into the 9:0011:00 range through the middle miles and further into the 11:0013:00 range across miles 2124 before a slight rally in the final two miles. That early speed came at Boulder's elevation of over 5,000 feet, a notable backdrop for a start built on quick, controlled miles before the closing stretch into downtown Boulder.
