His race showed a well-paced first half, holding between 6:33 and 7:00 per mile through mile 13, with miles 9 through 13 standing out as his strongest mile-plus stretch of the day, averaging under 6:50 per mile. The back half cooled gradually, drifting into the 7:30-9:30 range through the low 20s before he closed with a 7:56 and 8:07 over the final two miles. Running at Boulder's altitude of over 5,000 feet, Whitman navigated the elevation before finishing on the Pearl Street Mall in downtown Boulder, capping a race built on a disciplined, front-loaded effort.
