Strong Start, Steady Fade, Strong Finish Maria Dalton completed the marathon in 4:21:45, an average pace of 9:59 per mile. She opened aggressively, covering the first two miles in 8:46 each, then settled into a rhythm that held between 8:35 and 9:18 through mile nine. The middle miles brought some fluctuation, with elapsed pace drifting past 9:30 by mile fifteen and continuing to ease through the twenties before she closed with a strong final mile, dropping to 8:48 for miles 2526. Her fastest sustained stretch came early: miles four through eight averaged just under 8:50 per mile, well ahead of her overall race pace. That surge came before the course pushed out past Boulder Reservoir and through the county backroads that define the marathon route terrain that, combined with Boulder's altitude above 5,000 feet, makes her early efficiency notable. She passed through the lululemon Power-Up Zone near mile 22.5 already several minutes off that early rhythm, but rallied to finish strong on the Pearl Street Mall.
