Strong Closing Miles Power a Sub-4:00 Marathon Brian Lee finished the marathon in 3:59:53, an overall pace of 9:09 per mile. His race held remarkably steady through the first two-thirds, hovering between 9:01 and 9:13 per mile through mile 22, with a brief soft patch from miles 15-18 where the pace eased toward 9:34-10:06. From there he turned it around decisively, reeling off miles 23 through 26 at 8:57, 8:39, 8:38, and 8:43 his fastest sustained stretch of the day and a strong signal of well-managed effort late in a 26.2-mile race. That closing surge came through the marathon's final miles, which include the lululemon Power-Up Zone near mile 22.5, before the finish on the Pearl Street Mall in downtown Boulder a course run at over 5,000 feet of elevation.
