Fast Start Gives Way to a Gritty Back Half Alex Frieler finished the marathon in 4:24:32, averaging 10:05 per mile. His race opened briskly, holding between 8:44 and 8:57 pace through the first six miles, then eased through the middle miles into the low 9:00s and 10:00s as the race progressed. The closing miles slowed further, with mile 21 easing to 12:55, before he steadied again over the final miles to the finish. Racing at Boulder's elevation of over 5,000 feet, Frieler's early pace stands out as the strongest stretch of his day those first six miles were his fastest of the race. From there, the pacing settled into a more measured effort, closing out the marathon on the Pearl Street Mall in downtown Boulder.
