Steady Early Miles Precede a Late-Race Fade and Strong Rebound Thomas Kovarik completed the marathon in 4:21:34, averaging 9:59 min/mile. His first 17 miles were remarkably even, holding between 8:56 and 9:25 per mile, before the pace gradually eased through miles 18-22. Miles 23-25 saw the biggest slowdown, each landing in the 13-14 minute range, before he closed strong with a 10:18 final mile. That opening stretch through mile 17 stands as the highlight of the race nearly seventeen miles of tightly controlled pacing with no split slower than 9:25. Kovarik crossed the finish on the Pearl Street Mall in downtown Boulder, a course that sits above 5,000 feet of elevation, adding weight to the steadiness of those early miles even as the later stretch cost him time.
