Fast Start Fuels a Hard-Earned Finish Piper Reivich, 19, of Boulder, completed her marathon in 4:29:48, an average pace of 10:17 per mile. Her race opened briskly: the first nine miles clicked by near 8:40 pace, a stretch that held firm through the middle miles before the effort caught up with her. Between miles 18 and 21, her per-mile splits stretched into the mid-teens, the clearest dip of the day. From there she steadied, trimming back down into the 11- and 9-minute range over the final miles and closing with a 9:43 last mile, a strong rebound to the finish. That finish came on the Pearl Street Mall, capping a course run at over 5,000 feet of altitude in Boulder, a demanding backdrop for the early pace she carried through the race's first half.
