Strong Midrace Surge Fades Late in the Marathon Jake Porter finished the marathon in 4:06:38, an average pace of 9:24 per mile. His race built steadily through the first half, holding between 8:27 and 8:39 per mile from miles 10 through 18, before the closing miles slowed considerably, dropping to a 12:52 pace by mile 24. The standout stretch came from mile 9 to mile 11, where Porter covered two miles in 15:46 an 7:53 per mile pace, his fastest sustained running of the day. That surge came as the course wound toward Boulder Reservoir, part of a marathon route that ultimately finishes on the Pearl Street Mall in downtown Boulder, a city sitting above 5,000 feet of elevation. Porter's pacing discipline through the middle miles set up a race that, while it cost him ground late, showed real strength across the marathon's demanding middle third.
