Steady Early Pace Gives Way to a Tough Final Stretch Mason Maddox completed the marathon in 5:31:35, holding a remarkably consistent pace through the first 17 miles, hovering between 11:00 and 11:50 min/mile. That opening stretch was the strongest of his race, with cumulative pace never straying far from 11:20 min/mile through mile 17. From mile 18 onward, the pace slowed considerably, climbing past 15:00 and 16:00 min/mile through miles 19-22, before settling into the 14:00-15:00 min/mile range to the finish. The course took Maddox out past Boulder Reservoir and along the county backroads before the final miles wound toward downtown Boulder, finishing on the Pearl Street Mall a fitting close at over 5,000 feet of elevation.
