Strong Finish Rescues a Middle-Mile Fade Santiago Gray completed the marathon in 5:03:04, an 11:34 min/mile pace. The race opened briskly and consistently, with the first ten miles clicking off between 9:35 and 10:59 per mile. A gradual slowdown followed through the middle third, with splits stretching past 13 and 14 minutes per mile between miles 14 and 21, before Gray rallied over the closing miles. That late rally stood out: miles 24 and 25 were run at 9:50 and 9:39, the fastest two-mile stretch of his race, pulling the overall pace back down before the finish. The effort carried him onto the Pearl Street Mall to close out a course that, at over 5,000 feet of elevation, trimmed its net climb to roughly 603 feet this year.
