Strong Opening Miles Carry a Steady Marathon Finish Elijah Tomberg finished the marathon in 3:56:30, placing 325th overall and 260th among men in a field of 3,305. He opened fast, covering the first 11 miles in under 8 minutes per mile, with a season-best mile 11 split of 7:41. From there, his cumulative pace eased steadily, climbing from 7:58 per mile at the halfway point to 9:01 per mile by the finish, as miles 18 through 23 settled into the 10-minute range before he found another gear late. Boulder's marathon course runs past Boulder Reservoir and along county backroads above 5,000 feet before finishing on the Pearl Street Mall. Tomberg passed the lululemon Power-Up Zone near mile 22.5 as his pace eased to 8:52 per mile, then rallied to close his final mile in 8:41 en route to downtown Boulder.
