Consistent Midrace Miles Give Way to a Steady Closing Stretch Kenneth Knowski finished the marathon in 4:09:48, an overall pace of 9:32 per mile. After an early mile near 9:05, he settled into a tight rhythm through the middle of the race, holding between 9:05 and 9:20 per mile from mile 4 through mile 18. The final eight miles eased gradually, with per-mile splits stretching into the 10:2711:35 range as he moved toward the finish. His strongest sustained stretch came from mile 14 to mile 18, where he averaged roughly 8:51 per mile, his fastest multi-mile segment of the day. That stretch, run at Boulder's elevation of over 5,000 feet, helped anchor his overall time before the race closed on the Pearl Street Mall in downtown Boulder.
