His day built on two previous Boulderthon half marathons, and this marathon debut at the event showed the same aggressive early rhythm that has defined his racing here. James opened with his strongest running of the day, covering miles 16 in 41:44, a 6:57 average pace that put him among the race's early leaders. The pace held remarkably steady through the middle miles before fatigue set in past mile 20, with the stretch through the lululemon Power-Up Zone near mile 22.5 marking his slowest mile of the race. Even with that late slowdown, he closed with a strong final mile, finishing at altitude in downtown Boulder on the Pearl Street Mall.
