Steady Early Pace Gives Way to a Tough Final 10K Jesse Brettingen covered the marathon in 4:07:50, holding between 8:30 and 8:40 per mile through the first 20 miles a stretch completed in 2:53:54, an 8:41 average pace. That consistency was the highlight of the day: mile splits rarely strayed more than 15 seconds from one another across that span. The final 10K told a different story, as per-mile splits climbed into the 10:0013:50 range from mile 21 through 25 before settling to 10:39 for mile 26, pulling his overall elapsed pace to 9:27/mile by the finish. Brettingen's race played out on a course that runs past Boulder Reservoir and through Boulder County backroads before finishing on the Pearl Street Mall, all at over 5,000 feet of elevation. The steady first two-thirds of his marathon, held together well before the closing miles took their toll, showed real pacing control for most of the distance covered.
