Strong Opening Miles Give Way to a Tough Closing Stretch Clay Cutter finished the Boulderthon Marathon in 4:16:16, a 9:46 min/mile overall pace. He went out briskly, opening with a 7:41 first mile and holding the first dozen miles to roughly an 8:05 average. Cumulative pace stayed close to 8:15 min/mile through the midpoint, then began drifting upward, with the final five miles slipping well off that rhythm as elapsed pace climbed from 8:37 to 9:47 min/mile by the finish. Boulder's elevation, over 5,000 feet, is worth noting as context for that effort. The steepest slowdown came right around the lululemon Power-Up Zone near mile 22.5, where his pace for that mile stretched to 17:39 min/mile before he brought it back down to 11:10 for the run into the historic finish on the Pearl Street Mall.
