Strong Front Half Fuels Steady Marathon Finish Phelan Varez completed the 2026 Boulderthon Marathon in 4:20:42, averaging 9:57 per mile. He moved through the first 13 miles in 1:53:57, holding close to an 8:50 pace, then settled into the back half as the effort gradually eased toward the finish. Miles 1 through 13 stood out as the strongest stretch of the race, with Varez clicking off sub-9:00 miles consistently, including a sharp 7:43 split at mile 13. The course carried runners out past Boulder Reservoir before returning to finish on the Pearl Street Mall in downtown Boulder, a fitting close to a race run at over 5,000 feet of elevation. Miles 20 through 24 showed the most fade, but Varez steadied again over the closing two miles, bringing the effort home with a composed finish through downtown Boulder.
