Strong Early Miles Give Way to a Late Slowdown Alex K finished this year's marathon in 4:36:21 (10:32/mile), well off his 3:57:17 (9:03/mile) result at the same race last year. His race shape told the story: a steady, controlled first half near 8:55 pace, a modest dip around mile 10, then a gradual loosening through the middle miles that turned into a pronounced slowdown from mile 21 on, with several splits stretching past 13:00 before he tightened back up over the closing two miles. His clear standout stretch came in the opening nine miles, covered in 1:20:39 an 8:57 average pace, his fastest sustained mile-plus segment of the day. Racing at Boulder's altitude of over 5,000 feet, he carried that early rhythm out past the Boulder Reservoir and through the county backroads before working his way home to the finish on the Pearl Street Mall.
