Strong Start Gives Way to a Grinding Back Half Grant finished the marathon in 4:58:59. Through the opening 9 miles he ran a tight, even pace near 8:56 per mile, then the effort cost more with each stretch miles 10 through 20 settled into the 9:119:51 elapsed range before slowing further over the closing 10K, with elapsed pace easing to 11:24 by the finish. That first 9-mile stretch was the clear high point of the day, holding sub-9:00 pace mile after mile with barely any variation a segment worth building on for the next marathon. The final miles took Grant out past Boulder Reservoir and along the county backroads before the return into downtown Boulder and the finish on the Pearl Street Mall, a course run entirely above 5,000 feet of altitude.
