Steady Early Pace, Late Fade Marks Marathon Effort Alex Kowal finished the marathon in 4:32:26, an overall pace of 10:23 per mile. He ran the first half of the race with notable consistency, holding between 9:00 and 9:55 per mile through mile 17 and reaching the midpoint around 2:19 elapsed. From there the pace eased gradually, with the steepest dip coming between miles 21 and 25, where splits climbed into the 12:4714:40 range before he closed with a 10:21 final mile. His strongest sustained stretch came early: miles 1 through 10 averaged roughly 9:19 per mile, the most even running of his day. Kowal's race finished on the Pearl Street Mall in downtown Boulder, a city sitting above 5,000 feet of elevation throughout the 26.2-mile course. Along the way, he passed the lululemon Power-Up Zone near mile 22.5, just as the race entered its closing miles toward downtown.
