Steady Early Pace Gives Way to a Hard-Fought Finish Ellen Laurenz completed the marathon in 4:14:18, an average pace of 9:42 per mile. Her opening miles were her quickest, clicking off 8:23s and 8:30s through the first 10K, and she held a strong, steady rhythm from mile 3 through mile 17, rarely straying outside the 8:449:08 range. The back half told a different story: pace eased through the high 9:00s and 10:00s from mile 18 on, with miles 2123 slowing into the 12:0015:00 range before she rallied to close in 9:14 for mile 26. Boulder's elevation, over 5,000 feet, frames a course that runs out past the Boulder Reservoir before finishing on the Pearl Street Mall in downtown Boulder the same stretch of backroads Laurenz covered during her strong middle miles.
