Steady Pacing Anchors a Top-1% Half Marathon Finish Preston Ruth crossed the line in 1:21:47, good for 46th overall and 39th among men in a field of 7,223 at the Boulder half marathon. He held between 6:03 and 6:22 per mile through the first nine miles, a tight band that kept his cumulative pace locked near 6:08-6:11 for most of the race. A brief dip to 6:52 at mile 11 briefly slowed his overall pace before he answered with back-to-back 6:05 miles to close out 12 and 13, pulling his final elapsed pace down to 6:13 per mile. That two-mile closing stretch, matching his early race rhythm, stood out as the strongest running of the day. Given the sustained rebound, targeting a smoother middle section next time could shave a bit more off the final time.
