Stafford's race followed a fast-to-steady shape: his opening mile clocked 5:13, and his first three miles averaged 5:32 per mile, the quickest sustained stretch of his race. Pace eased through the middle miles, dipping to 6:35 by mile eight, before he closed with a 6:00 final mile. The half marathon course at this year's Boulderthon saw its net elevation gain cut nearly 50%, a notable factor for a race run above 5,000 feet in Boulder.
