Strong Late Kick Seals a Steady Half Hoa Nguyen finished the Half Marathon in 1:51:53, an 8:32/mile pace. He settled into a consistent rhythm through the middle miles, holding between 8:37 and 8:52 per mile from mile 1 through mile 11, with cumulative pace barely wavering across that stretch. The final two miles told a different story. After ticking through mile 11 in 9:03, Nguyen surged to a 7:44 split for mile 12 and followed with 7:58 to the finish his fastest sustained running of the race, dropping his overall pace in the closing stretch and closing strong on the Pearl Street Mall. That kind of finish, at over 5,000 feet of elevation, reflects well-managed effort and a smart final push rather than an early spend of energy.
