Negative Splits Carry a Strong Finish Richard Kim covered the half marathon in 1:47:54, steadily building speed as the race progressed. His opening mile came in at 9:06, and elapsed pace tightened mile after mile, dropping under 8:30 by mile six and continuing to fall through the second half. The closing stretch was the highlight: miles 9 through 13 clicked off in 7:53, 7:40, 7:44, 7:41, and 7:25, a sustained surge that pulled his overall elapsed pace down to 8:14 min/mile by the finish. That final mile was his fastest of the race. Kim closed on the Pearl Street Mall in downtown Boulder, a finish line sitting more than 5,000 feet above sea level.
