His mile splits stayed within a tight 8:088:44 band for the entire race, showing disciplined pacing rather than early speed followed by fade. The final two miles were his fastest of the day, each clocked at 8:08, a strong finishing kick that lifted his overall placement in the closing stretch. That kind of negative-split finish is hard to execute, and Schmidt's ability to speed up late, at altitude above 5,000 feet, speaks well of his conditioning. If there's room to build on this performance, it may be in the middle miles several fell in the 8:40 range where a touch more consistency could smooth the overall arc even further. Overall, a well-managed effort finishing on the Pearl Street Mall in downtown Boulder.
