Strong Start Fades Late, Then Rallies to the Finish Arturo Jaime completed the half marathon in 1:41:10, an average pace of 7:43 per mile. His fastest mile came right out of the gate, a 7:05 opening mile, and his cumulative pace held under 7:30 through the first seven miles before easing back as the back half wore on. He found a second wind over the closing two miles, clocking 7:39 for both mile 12 and mile 13 to close out the race stronger than the middle miles had suggested. Running at altitude in Boulder, over 5,000 feet, Jaime navigated a course that heads out past the Boulder Reservoir before returning to finish on the Pearl Street Mall in downtown Boulder. Given the strength of his final two miles, he may find it worth experimenting with a more even pacing strategy through the middle section next time out, holding closer to that opening rhythm a bit longer before the late kick.
