Steady Pace Gives Way to a Strong Closing Kick Matt Dempsey finished the half marathon in 1:56:55, averaging 8:55 per mile. His pacing stayed remarkably even through the middle miles, hovering between 9:01 and 9:19 from mile 6 through mile 11, before he found another gear late in the race. The final two miles were his best stretch of the day: covering miles 11 through 13 in roughly 8:02 per mile, well under his overall average, with a 7:49 close. That surge came after passing near the lululemon Power-Up Zone around mile 9.5, where his split held at 8:56. Racing at altitude in Boulder, sitting over 5,000 feet, that late acceleration stands out as the highlight of his race.
