Steady Build to a Strong Closing Kick Sam Lyall covered the half marathon in 1:48:01, an 8:14 min/mile pace. After opening near 8:40 per mile through the first four miles, he settled into a consistent 8:208:35 rhythm through the middle of the course, then began trimming time steadily from mile nine onward. The closing stretch was his best of the day: miles 11 through 13 clicked off in roughly 7:39 per mile, well under his overall average, as he pushed hardest when it counted most. That kind of finish lines up well with this year's half marathon course, redesigned with net elevation gain cut nearly 50 percent to 203 feet, giving runners like Lyall room to accelerate late rather than fight terrain in the final miles.
