Steady Pacing Gives Way to a Strong Closing Kick Ben O'Neil ran 1:49:24 for the half marathon, holding between 8:18 and 8:49 per mile through the middle miles before dropping to 8:00 and then 7:19 over the final two miles his fastest mile of the race. That closing surge pulled his overall elapsed pace down to 8:21 per mile by the finish, capping a race that stayed remarkably consistent for its first ten miles before sharpening at the end. Boulder sits above 5,000 feet, a backdrop against which O'Neil's finish plays out. The 2026 half marathon course also saw its net elevation gain cut nearly in half compared to prior years, trimmed to 203 feet a redesign that suits a runner who found his best gear in the closing stretch.
