Steady Start Fades Into a Patient Closing Mile Alex Stunkard finished the 10K in 1:03:24. Her race opened briskly, with a 9:21 first mile that proved her quickest of the day, before a gradual, steady slide in pace through the middle miles. By mile 4 her cumulative pace had eased to 9:59 per mile, and it continued to soften through mile 6, where a closing 11:33 split brought her home. That opening mile stood out as the strongest stretch of her race, a mile run well ahead of her overall 10:13 per mile average. Stunkard's effort came at Boulder's elevation of over 5,000 feet, and finished, like every distance in the event, on the historic Pearl Street Mall in downtown Boulder. A touch more even pacing across the middle miles could help her carry that early rhythm further into the race next time.
