Rousch's race opened briskly, with a 7:56 opening mile that proved his fastest of the day. From there, each subsequent mile ticked up gradually 8:20, 8:44, 9:04 before a brief rebound to 8:45 in mile five. The final mile slowed to 10:29, the race's clear low point, as cumulative pace drifted from 7:56 to an eventual 8:53 min/mile average. Given Boulder's elevation above 5,000 feet, the early pace was a strong foundation; dialing back slightly in the middle miles could help preserve more of that opening speed for the finish.
