His first two miles were his quickest, ticking off at 10:52 and 10:58, before easing through the middle miles in the 11:3012:10 range. The final mile slowed to 13:31, but the opening stretch stood out as the strongest mile-plus segment of his race, showing a well-managed early tempo before the pace settled later on. Racing through downtown Boulder, which sits above 5,000 feet of elevation, Hicks navigated the thinner air across the full 6.2 miles. Boulders reputation as National Geographics Happiest City in America made for a fitting backdrop to a race that began briskly and finished with room to build pacing consistency in future outings.
