Strong Opening Miles Give Way to a Steady Fade Steven Ayala-Martinez covered the 10K in 1:01:02, a result built on an aggressive start rather than an even effort. His first two miles clicked off at 8:36 and 8:37 per mile the fastest running of his race before the pace eased through the middle miles and settled into the 10:0011:00 range over the final stretch, closing with an 11:24 sixth mile. The shape of the race tells the story clearly: after banking time early, Ayala-Martinez's per-mile pace climbed steadily from mile 3 onward, finishing with an overall elapsed pace of 9:50 per mile. With Boulder's elevation sitting above 5,000 feet, that early speed likely asked a lot of the legs. Holding closer to his opening rhythm through the back half could be a worthwhile focus for future 10Ks.
