Hawkins opened briskly, clicking off his first two miles at 9:44 each before easing slightly to 10:12 for mile three. He rallied through miles four and five, dropping back to 9:54 and then 9:43 his fastest full mile of the race before the pace eased over the closing stretch. That mid-race surge through miles four and five stands out as his strongest running of the day, showing solid control after the early dip.
