Strong Start Fades Late in the Final Mile Creston Boucharel finished the 10K in 1:00:48, an overall pace of 9:48 per mile across the field of 3,071 entrants in Boulderthon. His race built steadily from a brisk opening mile through the third mile, before a tougher fourth mile nudged his cumulative pace outward, then a strong fifth mile pulled it back down before the final mile added time late. His fastest mile came right out of the gate a 9:05 opening split, the quickest mile of his day at over 5,000 feet of elevation. Miles two and three held close to that rhythm, in the 9:129:16 range, before the pace loosened through the second half. A runner with this kind of early speed might look at building more consistency into the closing miles to protect that strong start next time.
