Steady Start Gives Way to a Gradual Fade John Jenkins finished the 10K in 55:04, an 8:53 min/mile pace. His race opened briskly, with a 8:30 first mile and an 8:19 second mile, the fastest one-mile stretch of his day and enough to hold an 8:24 cumulative pace through two miles. From there, each split lengthened gradually, closing with a 9:45 final mile. Racing at Boulder's altitude, over 5,000 feet, that early pace made for a strong foundation even as the closing miles slowed. With his fastest running up front, John might look at working to hold that opening rhythm a bit further into future 10Ks.
