Strong Start Fades Late in Steady 10K Effort Gibran Vargas covered the 10K in 52:23, an 8:26 min/mile pace. He went out quickly, clocking 7:22 for the opening mile and holding close to that rhythm through two miles at a 7:28 cumulative pace. From there the pace eased steadily, mile by mile, before settling into the final stretch. Running at Boulder's altitude of over 5,000 feet, Vargas's first two miles stand out as the strongest stretch of his race, well under 8:00 pace before the closing miles slowed. With a solid foundation built early, he might look to carry that early rhythm further into the back half next time out.
