Date: Sept. 27, 2026 Participant: Kai Word #40916 Race: 2026 Boulderthon 5K Distance: 3.1 miles
Young Runner Shaves Over Three Minutes Off Last Year's 5K Kai Word ran the 2026 Boulderthon 5K in 26:33, a sizable improvement over his 29:53 finish at the 2025 Boulderthon. That's a jump from 435th overall to 302nd overall, and from 16th to 10th in the Male 14 & Under division. Kai's race started strong, with a 8:28 opening mile before surging to a 7:26 second mile, his fastest stretch of the day. He held that pace advantage into the final mile, closing at 9:47 to finish with an overall 8:33 min/mile pace. That second-mile push, coming at altitude in a city sitting over 5,000 feet, stands out as the highlight of his race and a good building block heading into future events.
