Strong Second Mile Fuels Steady 5K Finish Gator Schott completed the 5K in 28:57, an overall pace of 9:20 per mile, finishing 327th among men in a field of 2,677. Schott opened with a 9:33 first mile before surging to a 8:02 second mile, his fastest of the race. The final mile slowed to 10:23, pulling his overall pace back to 9:19 by the finish. That middle mile stood out as the clear high point of the race, sandwiched between two steadier efforts. Running at altitude in Boulder, sitting above 5,000 feet, adds a layer of difficulty to any pace shift like the one Schott produced in that second mile. With the race finishing on the Pearl Street Mall in downtown Boulder, Schott's pacing patternbuilding speed midrace before settling inoffers a clear target for even splits next time out.
