Strong Middle Mile Fuels a Solid 5K Finish Annika Mcdermott, 24, of Longmont, completed the 2026 Boulderthon 5K in 23:38. Her race built quickly through a fast start, surged to a strong second mile, then eased through the final stretch to the finish on the Pearl Street Mall. Her second mile was the standout stretch, clocked at 6:40, well ahead of her opening mile's 7:24 and her closing mile's pace. That middle-mile surge set the tone for her overall pace of 7:37 per mile. Running the race at over 5,000 feet of elevation, Mcdermott can look to that second-mile effort as a marker of her fitness and a pacing model worth carrying into future starts if she wants to close as strong as she opens.
