A Strong Middle Mile Powers a Steady 5K Finish Thomas Pickell completed the 5K in 27:15, an overall pace of 8:47 per mile. He finished in 343rd place out of the field of 2,677. Pickell's race built through the middle mile: after opening in 9:24, he surged to 8:01 for the second mile his fastest of the day before settling to 9:03 to close things out. That middle-mile push was the clear highlight of his effort, showing a strong ability to find a rhythm once warmed up. Running the race in his home city of Boulder, sitting at over 5,000 feet of elevation, Pickell can take confidence from how well he handled the pace shift. A slightly more even split between miles one and three could be a useful focus for future races.
