Strong Middle Mile Anchors a Steady 5K Effort Matthew Cleaver crossed the finish line in 28:34, good for 310th among men. Cleaver opened with a 9:19 first mile, then surged to his fastest mile of the day at 8:36, cutting his overall pace to 8:57 min/mile through two miles. The final mile slowed to 9:33, settling his overall pace at 9:13 min/mile for the 5K. That middle-mile push, coming at over 5,000 feet of elevation in Boulder, stands as the highlight of his race.
