A Strong Middle Mile Powers a Podium Finish Vickie Patton completed the 5K in 31:53, placing third in the F 60-64 division. Her race unfolded in three distinct stretches: an opening mile at 10:44, a sharp pickup to 8:36 for mile two, and a settling pace of 11:17 to close things out. That middle mile stands as the clear highlight of her race, a full two minutes faster than the miles bookending it, and it's where she made up the most ground. Running the 5K in her home city of Boulder, Patton covered a course that finishes on the historic Pearl Street Mall, at over 5,000 feet of elevation. Her ability to surge in the middle mile, even in thinner air, speaks well of her conditioning. A more even pacing strategy across all three miles could be worth exploring to see if it yields an even stronger overall time next time out.
