Strong Negative Split Powers Top-Tier Half Marathon Finish Kevin Dean crossed the line in 1:12:06, good for 11th overall and 11th among men in a field of 7,223, while topping the M30-34 division. His race built steadily: an opening mile at 5:25 settled into a 5:30-5:40 rhythm through the middle miles before a late surge carried him home. That closing stretch stood out. From mile 10 to the finish, Dean covered the final 3.1 miles at roughly 5:15 per mile, easily his fastest sustained running of the race, dropping his overall pace from 5:37 to 5:30. Racing at Boulder's altitude of over 5,000 feet, Dean's ability to accelerate late suggests room to push the early miles closer to that same rhythm next time.
